How Your Body Works With You And For You“Turning your birthing over to your body and your baby, trusting that each knows how to do it’s job is exactly what HypnoBirthing is about. This is the safest, most natural and most effective comfort measure you will use through your labor and birthing,” says Marie Mongan, author of Hypnobirthing, The Mongan Method. “Birth should be the most instinctual thing a woman does in her life,” states Kim Wildner, HypnoBirthing practitioner and author of “Mother’s Intention: How Belief Shapes Birth”. “It is designed to be safe and effective in perpetuating the species. Certain built-in mechanisms work at the instinctual and biological levels to ensure we will put our offspring above all else.” In HypnoBirthing, we believe that turning your birthing over to your body and your baby is central to the debate that a woman has to push her baby out of her body at birth. It is the debate that swirls around the world of birthing—‘to push or not to push’! It is the debate of instinctual pushing versus other-directed pushing. As a woman uses HypnoBirthing to prepare for the birth of her baby, she learns how to tune-in and listen to her body, “to do what your body tells you to do”. It is also referred to as breathing your baby down. The natural progression of labor usually has a resting phase after full dilation is complete. However, often women are instructed once fully dilated to begin pushing and pushing hard in managed births. Pushing requires an internal reflexive prompt much like defecation or regurgitation. If the reflex is not there yet, it is a non-productive action with wasted energy that produces fear, tension and pain. In HypnoBirthing, Birth Breathing is used when you are breathing your baby down during the birthing phase of labor. It is intended to assist the Natural Expulsion Reflex(NER) of your body to rhythmically move your baby gently and gradually down the birth path to the vaginal outlet without the need for long, forced painful pushing. Dr. Michel Odent, M.D., founder of the Primal Health Research Centre in London and the Maternity unit in Pithiviers, France, speaks of the Natural Expulsion Reflex “ as a time where a woman will usually enter a deep trance state at this time, accessing her most rudimentary brain stem where the ancient knowledge of giving birth is stored. It is a time where quiet and low light is essential to get to this place in the brain, a time where the laboring mother feels protected, secure and uninterrupted.” HypnoBirthing’s “basic tenet is that childbirth is a normal, natural and healthy function for women. Like the bodies of our sister creatures in nature, the bodies of healthy pregnant women instinctively know how to birth, just as their bodies know how to conceive and how to nurture the development of the babies they are carrying. HypnoBirthing helps mothers align with their own innate capacity to be able to give birth gently, comfortably, powerfully and joyfully. We don’t promise births that are totally free of discomfort, but we firmly believe that comfortable birthing is a possibility for 95 percent of birthing mothers through this philosophy and program.” My hypnosis practice, the Power of Possibilities is located in Boise. I would be honored to share in the preparation to welcome your baby to the world in a calm, easy and peaceful way. Private or group classes available. Peace truly does begin with birth.
